Who Is Hel?

In old Norse lore, Hel is the ruler of the underworld, governing the deep realm where those who do not fall in battle must go. Half-living and half-corpse, she commands the quiet, inescapable domain beneath the roots of the world tree. She represents the final resting place, absolute authority over the dead, and the quiet power that waits at the end of every road.

The Brew

I don’t do mass-produced. To make a set of runes that actually speaks, you need the right ingredients. For the Hel set, I had to travel down the long, winding road to the gates of the underworld, past the barking of hounds and the shadows of the silent realm:

• The Black: Heavy, freezing shadow scooped straight from the eternal gloom of the underworld hall where the sun never shines.

• The Gold: Rich, preserved funerary gold buried alongside ancient kings as tribute to the mistress of the dead, glowing with cold, immortal wealth.

• The Anchor (Gold): Freyja weeps tears of gold, and luckily I had a bucket handy. I used it to outline the ancient symbols and lock the chaos inside. (Honestly, I just traded a shiny rock to a grumpy, one-eyed wanderer for it, but let’s go with the bucket story).
